FAQ

  • How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

Your child may benefit from speech therapy services if he or she has difficulty with receptive language (understanding language), expressive language, sound production or social skills.

You can refer to the CDC’s Developmental Milestones to determine whether your child can benefit from additional support.

  • What is a speech sound disorder?

A speech sound disorder is when a child has trouble saying certain sounds the right way. This can make it hard for others to understand them. It's more than just cute toddler talk — the sounds may not improve over time without help.

Some kids might leave out sounds (saying "ca" instead of "cat")

Some might switch sounds (like saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit")

Some make sounds that don’t exist in English or that aren’t typical for their age.

It’s totally normal for young kids to make mistakes while learning to talk, but if it keeps happening past a certain age or affects how well others understand them, it might be a speech sound disorder.

  • What is a language disorder?

A language disorder means a child has trouble understanding what people say, using words to express themselves, or both. It's not about how clearly they speak (that's a speech issue) — it's more about the words they know, how they put them together, and how well they follow or share ideas in conversation.

    There are two main types:

Receptive language disorder – This means the child has a hard time understanding what others are saying.
    For example, they might:

    Seem confused when given directions

    Have trouble answering questions

Not understand age-appropriate stories or conversations

Expressive language disorder – This means the child struggles to express themselves with words.
    For example, they might:

Use shorter or simpler sentences than other kids their age

Leave out important words or mix up word order

Have a hard time telling stories or explaining things

Some kids can have both types.

  • What will therapy look like?

SSTS strives to provide an elevated experience, with a strong emphasis on family involvement. Therapy will be a combination of evidence based practice strategies, and parent/caregiver coaching.

  • How often will my child need to be seen?

The frequency and duration of your child’s therapy will depend on their needs and will be determined following the initial evaluation.

  • Is an evaluation required?

In order to get a complete picture of your child’s strengths and needs, an evaluation is recommended, to ensure that we are providing the most effective therapy. We recommend an initial evaluation at the initation of services; however, we may accept outside evaluations completed in the last 4 months.

  • How long will my child need therapy?

Unfortunately, this is not a question that we can answer concretely, as there are a variety of factors that contribute to the duration of therapy. Factors include child motivation, severity of disorder, attendance, family involvement, and carryover of skills.
